The CDL, i.e., commercial driver’s license test, is a series of examinations that are designed to assess the knowledge, skills, and abilities of individuals hoping to become commercial drivers. The test varies between different states but generally consists of written knowledge tests, skills tests, endorsement tests, and a medical examination.

As an aspirant, it’s important for you to study relevant material, attend training, and practice a great deal to pass the test successfully.

What’s Covered in The CDL Test

The CDL test varies significantly between states; its content and format change almost every year. However, here’s a general guideline you can keep in mind to help you understand what the CDL test in Florida covers:

  • General Knowledge – commercial driving rules, traffic laws, safe vehicle operation, vehicle inspection, basic control skills, and on-road driving.
  • Air Brakes Endorsement Test – understanding of air brake systems, components, and proper operation.
  • Combination Vehicle Test - coupling and uncoupling, inspecting combination vehicles, and safe operation.
  • Additional Endorsement Tests- HazMat (Hazardous Materials), Tanker, Passenger, School Bus, and others.
  • Skills Tests - pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control skills test (conducted off-road), and an on-road driving test.

Make sure to study the Florida Commercial Driver License Handbook, which is typically provided by the FLHSMV. And, of course, enroll yourself in Sun State CDL’s CDL test preparation and training programs for a more comprehensive understanding of how it all works.
